It is in our tradition to get personal with celebrated personalities based in Benue on their birthdays. Today we are celebrating Oxbee, an Ace Producer who happens to be the CEO of Oxbeemixx Studios, a Musical studio located in the heart of the Food basket of the Nation, Benue state. It was a very interactive session with the CEO Himself. Enjoy!
MAKHITS: GOOD DAY SIR.
OXBEEMIXX: Good Day.
MAKHITS: PLEASE CAN WE MEET YOU?
OXBEEMIXX: I’m Yoo Mark Aer-Tor aka Oxbee aka Oxbeemixx, CEO Oxbeemixx, I’m a Civil \ Sound Engineer, I’m married to Yoo Peniel Sedoo CEO Sedypen Foods, we are blessed with a son Yoo Kater Aer-Tor.
MAKHITS: MR OXBEE, PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT YOU, INCLUDING YOUR FAMILY AND EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND.
OXBEEMIXX: Like I mentioned before I’m Yoo Mark Aer-Tor aka Oxbee aka Oxbeemixx, CEO Oxbeemixx, I’m a Civil \ Sound Engineer, I’m married and blessed with a son. I was into the family of Engr. & Mrs. Yoo Tor -Aer Ibamke, I’m the first out of two boys, I attended Makurdi International School, Mount Saint Gabriels’ Secondary School and Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi, I studied Music and Sounds from a number of school in the States.
MAKHITS: YOU ARE A PRODUCER AND CEO OF OXBEE MUSIC STUDIOS, PLEASE TELL US WHERE IT IS LOCATED AND HOW LONG IT HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE.
OXBEEMIXX: Oxbeemixx studios has been around for like 6yrs now, but I started producing 8 years ago when I was still in the university so didn’t really give it my all till when I left the university in 2009. Since then the studio has been growing but still not getting my full attention because of my office work. Oxbeemixx Studios is located at M5 Kwararafa Quarters in Makurdi-Benue State.
MAKHITS: YOUR NAME IS A VERY KNOWN NAME IN THIS PART OF OUR COUNTRY, WE WANT YOU TO TELL US HOW IT ALL STARTED AND HOW THE JOURNEY HAS BEEN SO FAR.
OXBEEMIXX: The story is a funny one actually, I can’t really tell it how it happened but I will try. I have always like music and I have ever dreamed of making my music and making music for others too even when I knew nothing about it at that time. My friend Msoo will help me download softwares and we will try to make music but it will not happen since we knew nothing about music, so at that time we tried and tried and decided to stop. This was back then when I was in Secondary School let say 2000, 2001 there about. A friend named LB was the one who actually thought me the basics of music and production using FL Studio 4. From there I meant a lot of other producers and I also learnt one or two things from them. The journey is not an easy one but I love making music so I’m still pushing it with the little time I have off office duty.
MAKHITS: AS A PRODUCER, YOU DEFINATELY KNOW THE RUDIMENTS OF MUSIC AND WHAT MAKING A GOOD MUSIC ENTAILS, WHAT ARE THE THINGS YOU THINK MOST UPCOMING MUSICIANS FAIL TO PUT INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN PRODUCING A SONG?
OXBEEMIXX: Well what can I possible say on this one! Most upcoming musicians are just good at copying from the bigger musicians, I mean the spend their time, energy and resources trying to be someone else instead of making their own kind of music and sounding like them. Today when you want to tell an artist about his or her song you just say “what’s that your song that sounds like Usher again” it’s like this today because we lack originality in the industry presently.
MAKHITS: WHAT ARE THE MAJOR CHALLANGES YOU ENCOUNTER IN COURSE OF YOUR WORK AS A PRODUCER?
OXBEEMIXX: The biggest challenge is funding, the more advanced your gears are the more you sound professional, over the years we have been upgrading our gears to what we can afford and it has helped our sound to improve.
MAKHITS: PLEASE RECOUNT TO US YOUR MOST AMUSING ENCOUNTER WITH AN ARTISTE YOU’VE WORKED WITH.
OXBEEMIXX: I hardly use words like most or best because I don’t believe in those words because when you think this is it, something comes that is more than the other best, sometimes I work with an artist smiling and sometime the same artist, we will be fighting and working at the same time LOL, really I have worked with a number of artists some of them even learnt how to produce and they are doing very well. YUNGZIL is one of my artist that is now a dope producer. Other Artists I have worked with are BoiSolo, BeegSane, JiggyDu, CupaStance, Ezotik, Shogzy, Micaero, KrisPinz, KID, AJ Natives, General Phil etc I can’t mention them all, all of them wonderful people.
MAKHITS: WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT “NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY”, DO YOU THINK WE ARE WHERE WE OUGHT TO BE ON THE GLOBAL MAP?
OXBEEMIXX: Nigerian music is where it ought to be and it’s still growing very fast comparing it to where and how it started
MAKHITS: PLEASE, ON A SCALE OF 0-10, KINDLY RATE OUR ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY HERE IN BENUE.
OXBEEMIXX: At the moment 4, Benue used to promote their own I can remember back then when I was a dancer we would anchor shows people will come out pay and be entertained, but all that changed after the government contracted TuFace to organise an end of year show that the paid him heavily. TuFace went ahead and brought entertainers out of Benue he paid them well and it was a free show too. Since then free has affected the industry in Benue State. Plus the so called TuFace has done nothing to help the industry in the state over the years even though he has been enjoying a lot from the state as an artist.
MAKHITS: AS AN INDIVIDUAL, WHAT EFFORT HAVE YOU PUT IN SO FAR TO ENHANCE ENTERTAINMENT HERE?
OXBEEMIXX: In my own little way I have helped artist define themselves and their music.
MAKHITS: DO YOU LISTEN TO RADIO STATIONS HERE, PLEASE COMMENT ON OUR RADIO STATIONS AND THEIR PROGRAMMES?
OXBEEMIXX: I hardly listen to radio stations here because I’m always away in abuja. But when I’m in town (Makurdi) I listen to harvest FM and joy FM.
MAKHITS: YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL WIFE WHO WAS RECENTLY DELIVERED OF A CUTE BABY BOY, HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO COPE WITH FAMILY AND WORK?
OXBEEMIXX: Waoh, it has not been easy but it’s been interesting all thesame. It’s the same change thing from a single guy to a married man and now a father. The Lord has been there for me so I can’t shout.
MAKHITS: WHAT ADVICE DO WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG BLOOD WHO INTENDS VENTURING INTO PRODUCTION?
OXBEEMIXX: I will say they should put in their best, but first learn music because as a producer you will have to understand music to be able to make music. They should not just copy who ever is mentoring them because I have seen a lot of guys doing that. They should try to be unique in their style of production.
MAKHITS: WHO ARE YOUR TOP 3 BENUE BASED PRODUCERS?
OXBEEMIXX: My three Benue based producers are YungZil, Denx and dj-Lanky.
MAKHITS: DO YOU CONSIDER THEM THREATS TO YOU?
OXBEEMIXX: Nah! We all have our unique feel which makes us different in our own way.
MAKHITS: FINAL WORDS FOR THE READERS OF THIS ARTICLE
